Everything that’s wrong with DmC: Devil May Cry

dickkickington:

I honestly feel that this deserved its own text post:

You need to understand exactly just how much this new entry is destroying the franchise before you say that fans of the original games should “not care.” And “just not buy it.” Throwing up words like “entitlement” is just an easy way of stepping out of an argument without looking at the actual harm this game is doing to its own franchise.

1.) Dante vs. Donte

Let’s look at Donte. And I don’t mean his appearance, or his hair, or anything else like that. I mean Donte as a character in relation to the previous entries and how these new developers and writers are completely missing the point of Dante. Dante is big, loud, CUH-RAYZEE, and cool. He does everything you want to do in these games, and he has a helluva lot of fun doing it. He can be self-parodying and is just an all-around really awesome dude. The creator of Dante, Hideki Kamiya, wanted to make him with his idea of “cool,” while also making a point of not having him use drugs, alcohol, or curse. Kamiya felt that those were lazy ways of trying to make a character seem “cool.”

Dante is cool because he is wild and has a load of fun killing demons while eating pizza and strawberry sundaes. He doesn’t smoke. He doesn’t drink. He doesn’t go on about how it’s “a bad day to have a hangover.” And he certainly doesn’t get into “FUCK YOU” contests with bosses. The fact that the new DmC designer, Tameem Antoniades, doesn’t care about fans, the original series, or the character of Dante is proof of his own arrogance, especially since Donte is basically what Tameem aspires to be. Tameem smokes, wears his hair like Dontes original design, and even dresses basically the same.

DmC is simply wish-fulfillment for Tameem and he’s destroying the actual character of Dante in the process.

2.) Gameplay

But Devil May Cry is a game before it’s anything else, so we should take a look at the actual gameplay, itself. Devil May Cry has always been about fast-paced, sick and SSSTYLISH gameplay, aside from DMC2. (A game that was very slow, easy, and also made by a completely different team than the other entries, I’d like to point out.) The DMC games have always clocked in at about 60 fps MINIMUM, with the fourth entry, which is also the craziest, sometimes able to get around 200 fps. Now, the human eye can’t detect this, but I just want to use it as a point of reference.

DMC4 ran on an in-house engine called MT Framework. This engine is why it was also able to be ported to PC so easily, and also improved upon. It’s not every day you see a GOOD hack and slasher on PC, let alone an almost perfect one. Especially with DMC3 being one of the worst ports ever made. So, Capcom has a perfectly serviceable, complete engine on hand made SPECIFICALLY for Devil May Cry sequels. Instead, Ninja Theory decided to abandon MT Framework in favor of the Unreal Engine, due to their familiarity with it.

Unreal Engine is an engine used primarily for FPS’s and other games along those lines. It’s literally built FOR the Unreal Tournament games. As such, DmC clocks in at about 30 fps. Tameem has stated that they COULD have reached 60 fps, but they would have had to do without their morphing environments.

Let me say this again:

Ninja Theory decided to weaken and slow down the actual game just for their artsy story elements. Ninja Theory sacrificed gameplay for story. In a hack and slash franchise about killing demons with swords and guns.

Do you see what’s wrong with this? DmC is actually noticeably slower in its actual gameplay, not to mention easier. They’ve done away with lock-on, which was integral to the movelist in the series, taunting, and have thrown in random slow-motion, a HEAVY and LIGHT ATTACK system, and also made it so that guns have cooldown, which is pretty much akin to reloading. They have also gotten rid of jump cancelling and the game now has auto-float. Not to mention Donte’s Devil Trigger now slows down time, knocks all enemies into the air around him, AND regenerates his health at a rapid pace. The style meter is also now based around damage, rather than complexity of attacks and combos, and only lowers if you get hit.

I’m going to toss in some points of reference for gameplay:

This is Dante in Devil May Cry 4:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnbnqJSpj-Q

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORgSuIIesIE

Assuming you took the time to watch those in full, I’d like to point out:

DOING EVERYTHING THAT WAS DONE IS VERY DIFFICULT TO DO. It takes months of practicing, and requires deep understanding of the actual game mechanics.

But, seeing as how Donte uses many of Nero’s attacks and gameplay elements, such as snatching, maybe I should post a video of Nero for reference:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnsyVt4IO5A

I’d like to point out that this is also being done on the games hardest difficulty level, and that the entire second half of that video literally requires nanosecond timing. And dat SSSTYLE.

Here’s DmC in its latest build:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcMiIfEyak4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=903X23ISK-o

Did you watch those? I certainly hope you did. DmC is slow, lacks style, and completely destroys Devil May Cry entire flow, simply because Ninja Theory wants to make an “artsy” game about propaganda and the government and other bullshit that doesn’t belong in Devil May Cry.

Once again:

Ninja Theory is using Devil May Cry to tell a story about how the government is lying to you.

3.) Wrapping up

So, now that you have some GENERAL idea of where we come from, I’m going to touch upon one major point that gets brought up: the audience. They want to bring in a new audience. Okay, I get that. But, let’s keep something else in mind: Devil May Cry 4 is the best-selling entry in the series. It made Capcom A LOT of money. It obviously has an established fanbase that is VERY willing to spend money on the series.

What this new entry does is alienate that fanbase. Dumbing down the character and gameplay and saying “the fans don’t matter” is not a good business practice. Originally, Capcom figured DmC would sell 5 million copies. They’ve recently lowered that estimation to about 2.5 million when they realized that they lost a good chunk of their core audience. New players may come in, but they won’t be nearly as numerous as the already established DMC fans that won’t buy this game.

Instead, a vast majority of Devil May Cry fans are buying the HD Collection, or just boycotting Capcom in general. You may call us “entitled,” but we’re looking out for the better interest of the series, as a whole. Capcom even had to go so far as to re categorize this new entry from a “reboot” to now calling it an “alternate universe.” They know they fucked up. Tameem has already said that we’ve seen about 60% of the game. They’d backpedaling all over the place and the game is going to probably sell poorly but get rave reviews because “fans are so entitled and mean and don’t like his hair.”

To anyone else in the Devil May Cry tag, and that was considering picking up DmC, I hope this is a wake up call.

1. Who told you this Dante doen’t enjoy killing demons and has fun doing so? I bet he does.

This Dante does not smoke either.

He does eat pizza, though.

The original Dante drank too.

I wouldn’t exactly call mentioning that it is a bad day for a hangover “going on about it”. He just mentiones it. You could probably even call this self irony.

2. You DO realize that Capcom chose NT to do DmC because they are known for their excellent story telling, right? So, is isn’t exactly a surprise that they’d care a lot for their environment morphing.

I played DmC at Gamescom, and it didn’t feel slower. So, I personally don’t see a problem with this. I won’t say that this is my final opinion about this, because, well, you’re not getting a lot of time for playing these demos.

Just tell me how you can know for sure that DmC ist so incredibly easy? Have you played through the whole game yet?

Also, you won’t miss the lock-on feature; or better said it’s visibility, since this game does have some sort of lock-on. Actually, it worked better then the visible lock-on feature.

Dunno ‘bout you, but I never used the taunts anyway, so…

The slow motion isn’t random, it only happens when you defeated the very last enemy.

Don’t know what’s so bad about having weapons that deal greater damage then others do, it actually seems kinda realistic and fun to experiment with.

I have to admit that I’ve never heard anything about the guns having cooldown now, it might be something that I missed though. Maybe you could link me to were this was stated or something?

The game does have jump cancelling. And evasion cancelling.

What do you mean by auto-float?

Gotta admit the devil trigger really seems rather messed up. But they said it’d be updatable, so maybe it’ll do other things at some point of the game.

Again, telling a story is NT’s job. So why complain about ‘em doing so? I mean, ‘k, a telling a political story might be a bit odd in a Devil May Cry game, but hey, it could be really good, ya know?

3. Yeah, it really seems things didn’t go as planned.

Which doesn’t mean it’ll be a bad game.

Also, about DMC4: this might just be my personal view, but despite it being the best selling game, it wasn’t the best. To me, it seemed, compared to DMC3, like a step backwards rather then forward. So, yeah, I kinda welcome the idea of trying to bring something new and fresh into the world of DMC.

Cigarette company testing on beagles. Enjoy your cancer sticks.

me at my computer right now. Sicks bitches are sick. Those poor dogs :(

but but they’re just PUPPY DOGS!!!!
cig companies make me sick anyway. this is just disturbing.

I look this up to make sure this was true and it totally was. “In tobacco inhalation experiments, dogs, primates, guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, lambs, chickens, rodents and other animals are mutilated, pumped full of nicotine and forced to inhale smoke. Dogs are forced to inhale cigarette smoke on mechanical ventilators. In one experiment, researchers cut holes in the throats of beagles’ and forced them to breathe concentrated cigarette smoke for an entire year. Other tests have involved inserting electrodes into dogs’ penises to measure the effect of cigarette smoke on sexual performance. Masks are strapped on to the faces of rats and mice while cigarette smoke is pumped directly into noses. Rhesus monkeys are confined to chairs with head devices, while being exposed to nicotine and caffeine to study effects on breathing.”
It seriously just keeps going on about what they did. That’s just a small sampling of the testing tobacco companies used to try to prove that their cigarettes were safe for human use.
If you happen to be somebody who smokes. Try to find a way to quit. Just about everything that can go wrong in your body is made worse by smoking. Just like trying to do anything healthy for you body. It’s going to be hard to change that. But know just as you have support for losing weight, or fighting eating disorders, there is also the same support for you to quit smoking here on tumblr.

It was pretty apparent between this and concept and teaser art that DMC4 was originally going to be set in a snowy location. That got compressed into just being Fortuna Castle and the surrounding grounds. I never liked how 4 ended up being Ice Level, Jungle Level, Industrial Level instead of being one big location like in 1 and 3. One HUGE Arctic area would have been bad ass, but I’m sure some executive decided to have it changed for some dumb reason.

Learning anatomy drawing is important. Period. Whatever you plan to draw and however you plan to draw it you need to have an idea of what it actually looks like, practice in realism, before you plan to move on to creative interpretation.

Here are examples of all different kinds of athletic body types to illustrate the importance of knowing what sort of “built” look you will need to go for when drawing and designing a character. Not all fit is the same fit and it is so hard to find adequate variety when looking for references. These were linked by a talented comic artist Nina Matsumoto. Here site can be found here.

A good sampling of her art can be found here.

the difference in musculature between sprinters and long distance runners is craaazy

this is a lovely reference

One of the best posts on here. I’ve been hoping for this to circle around again.

Commercial can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZyh5T6P-V4
